CEO Message: How YWCA Is Responding
YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish has been at the forefront of the biggest issues of the day for more than 130 years, and our work remains constant today. At a time when our community and those we serve need us more than ever before, YWCA remains steadfast in our mission and commitment to peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people.
Recent actions of the federal government, including a flood of executive orders and calls to freeze funding for organizations across the country, has had an immediate impact on the health and safety of our communities. While many of these orders are still progressing and are being challenged in court, we know the effects are horrifyingly real for our work and the everyday lives of those we serve.
Like many nonprofits, we rely on federal funding to fuel programs for those who need our services: individuals and families in need of shelter, job seekers searching for employment, domestic violence survivors looking for safety. These funds are essential to YWCA's work to build a safer, stronger, more economically vibrant region that benefits us all.
Nonprofits like ours across the country are under intense scrutiny right now, and we anticipate more moments in the future where we must be prepared to fight on behalf of those we serve. Whatever comes next, we are here for this battle.
This is about people and basic human needs. We will continue to serve and to build – just as we have for over 130 years. There is nothing that can take or shake our united resolve to create a world where all women and girls can thrive. This is what we have been called to do.
No matter the challenge, we want to affirm the importance of your support and the power of collective action. We are strong, organized, and will work together to stand up for our values. Our work may not be simple or easy, but together we can and will continue to move YWCA’s mission forward.
In the words of our 2021 Inspire Luncheon keynote speaker, Stacey Abrams, "I'm going to move forward because going backwards is not an option, and standing still is not enough."
With gratitude,
Maria Chavez-Wilcox, CEO
