YWCA Luncheon brings Angélique Kidjo and Terry McMillan to Seattle and Everett

“Women & Girls Rising” on April 26 and May 16
February 23, 2017

SEATTLE, WA – Join the 2017 YWCA Luncheons: Women & Girls Rising, featuring keynote speakers Angélique Kidjo (singer, activist, and humanitarian) and Terry McMillan (bestselling author of How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Waiting to Exhale), as well as stories of survival, solidarity, and community from women served by YWCA. The events will be held in Seattle’s Washington State Convention Center on April 26 and Everett’s Edward D. Hansen Conference Center on May 16.

Both speakers embody YWCA’s mission to expand opportunity and empowerment to marginalized communities, especially women of color. Angélique Kidjo, Grammy Award-winner and recipient of the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award, recently performed as one of the headliners at the Women’s March on D.C., January 21. Terry McMillan, following her 2016 release, I Almost Forgot About You, was lauded by NPR for “giving voice to people who are often overlooked or ignored.”

Event proceeds will benefit YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish, which has spent more than 120 years advancing the quality of life for women of all ages, races, and faiths. We help more than 15,000 individuals and families a year discover their potential and take control of their future, creating a stronger community where everyone can live with dignity and respect.

Each spring, YWCA’s King and Snohomish Counties Luncheons bring together more than 2,500 guests in support of women and families. Last year, this generous group raised over $1.2 million to fund YWCA programs that provide resources for sexual assault and domestic violence survivors, affordable housing, and job training. The YWCA Luncheons gather together a community in the fight for equal opportunities for women and girls, and social justice for all.

Register for these events on the YWCA website or call 206.490.4378. There is no cost to register, but guests will be asked to make a $150 suggested gift at the event.
