Our Featured Speaker

Terry McMillan’s writings are inspirational and convey experiences of women of all races.  Born in Port Huron Michigan, McMillan received her B.A. in journalism in 1977 from the University of California, Berkeley and briefly attended the Master of Fine Arts in film at Columbia University. McMillan published her first short story, “The End,” in Yardbird Reader in 1976.

McMillan’s first novels were published in 1987 and 1989. In 1992, while a tenured professor at the University of Arizona Tucson, her first hit novel and New York Times Bestseller, Waiting to Exhale took the world by storm. Made into film in 1995, Waiting to Exhale was in the top 30 highest grossing films of 1995. McMillan’s second hit novel, How Stella Got Her Groove Back   was released in 1996 and became a hit film in 1998.

Credited for always writing from a place of honesty, creativity, and poignancy, McMillan is able to bring women together through her writings. McMillan’s presentations and readings are often interactive where she encourages commentary, shared experiences, and dialogue. McMillan creates an environment from which all women can draw their own strength and empowerment.
