Domestic Violence Awareness & Help
Friday, December 16, 2011

Purse TweetUp at YWCA Greenbridge Learning Center

Domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime and strikes more than 145 times each hour in the United States. But help is available, and the YWCA is part of the solution.

YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish joined with YWCA USA and The Allstate Foundation on October 24 to raise awareness about domestic violence by participating in a special event that recognized Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Called the Purple Purse TweetUp, held at YWCA Greenbridge Learning Center, the event demonstrated to participants how they can approach and talk to a family member, friend or co-worker who they suspect of is a victim of domestic violence and learn what they can do about it.

More than 100 attended. In response, The Allstate Foundation donated $10,000 to the YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish to fund programs that support domestic violence victims.

The event was held to spread the message about PurplePurse.com, a website launched by The Allstate Foundation that appears to be an online shopping magazine, but after scrolling down the page, the user will find a variety of information and resources specific to the issue of domestic violence and financial empowerment. The website serves as a tool to raise awareness and provides a safe and informative place for women to educate themselves.

PurplePurse.com also provides a place for women to start a discussion about domestic violence.

On December 9, children at YWCA Family Village Lynnwood gained a new place to seek literary refuge when the doors were open to a library established by Jewish Women International (JWI), YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish and the Verizon Foundation.

The Verizon Foundation donated $15,000 to JWI’s National Library Initiative for the Lynnwood facility, the first in Washington and the newest of 38 such libraries established in the nation.

JWI’s National Library Initiative is working in partnership with volunteers, businesses and corporations to establish 100 children’s libraries in domestic violence shelters across the United States. Each library provides a chance for children enduring difficult circumstances to continue to learn and grow, according to JWI officials.

YWCA Family Village Issaquah, which offers counseling, safe shelter and education for survivors of domestic violence and their families, used the Verizon funds to transform an underutilized group space into a library – complete with 150 new books, small and large rocking chairs, bookcases, a study table,  chairs and area rugs. In addition, Verizon Wireless and its Washington employees donated another couple hundred books.
