Meals Program Assistant #8-1105

The mission of the YWCA of Seattle • King CountySnohomish County is to advance the quality of life for women of all ages, races and faiths, and their families.  YWCA Angeline’s Center for Homeless Women supports this mission by providing day and overnight shelter plus supportive services for homeless and formerly homeless women. 

TITLE:  Meals Program Assistant (part-time or on-call position)

DESCRIPTION:  YWCA Angeline’s offers nutritious breakfasts, lunches and snacks for up to 150 women at each meal time.  The Meals Program Assistant helps to prepare and serve meals, wash dishes and do on-going clean-up.

REPORTS TO:  Cook

LOCATION:  2030 Third Avenue, Downtown Seattle

RESPONSIBILITIES

Food Preparation

  • Keeps food prep and serving areas clean and organized
  • Assists in prepping and cooking meals

Meal Service

  • Prepares dining room for service including condiment table
  • Plates individual servings and does meal count
  • Offers meals in a friendly and welcoming way

Clean-up

  • Maintains kitchen and dining room in clean, organized conditions that meet health and safety standards
  • Helps keep surfaces clean and organized continually
  • Wheels dirty bus cart to kitchen and replaces with clean cart in dining room
  • Sprays food off of dirty dishes/pots and loads into dishwasher rack
  • Runs dishwasher and allows clean dishes/pots to air dry before storing
  • Puts dishes/pots away

Other

  • Assists in training client and community volunteers in safe food handling
  • Assists in supervising client and community volunteers
  • Keeps Cook informed of program activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability in safe food handling
  • Current Food Handlers’ Card
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of people
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity, including sensitivity to the needs of volunteers, clients and  staff from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Ability and willingness to work independently and as part of a team and to make sound judgments without on-site supervision
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 40 pounds
  • Valid WA State Drivers License
  • Any combination of skills and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform this job effectively

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least one year of meal preparation and cooking experience for large groups
  • Experience with commercial kitchen equipment (e.g., dishwasher, steamer trays, stove)
  • Experience related to homelessness, mental health and substance abuse
  • Computer literate with Microsoft Word and Outlook

HOURS, RATE, BENEFITS

  • Part-time – up to 20 hours per week
  • $11.50 per hour
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Classification:  Non-exempt.
  • Pro-rated benefit package including pro-rated medical insurance, retirement plan, plus generous vacation, holiday and sick-leave plans
