Celia didn’t know much about breast cancer when she visited one of the YWCA’s Women’s Health Outreach mobile screenings for a free annual pap smear. But while she was there, she learned about the importance of clinical breast exams and breast self-exams for women under 40.
“Is the breast exam free, too?” she asked. The answer was yes. And so she opted to take advantage of the service.
During the breast exam, the medical provider found a barely detectable lump in Celia’s right breast. On the spot, YWCA Women’s Health Outreach enrolled her in the Breast and Cervical Health Program so that she could receive free medical care without delay and without the stress of worrying how to pay for it. A diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound performed just days after her breast exam revealed that Celia had invasive breast cancer.
She underwent surgery to remove the lump right away and received radiation treatment, as well—all at no cost to her. She is now in full recovery. Today, Celia's outlook is bright and she is enormously thankful for this life-saving assistance.
