Sound Youth VISTA

Empowering youth in the Greater Seattle area with tutoring, mentoring, coaching and behind-the-scenes capacity building.

The 2013-14 Sound Youth VISTA team

Sound Youth, a program of Americorps VISTA, empowers youth to fulfill their potential and to address poverty as it impacts families and young people. Service members are placed at partner organizations in the greater Seattle area, including our YWCA, to work on capacity-building projects.

By empowering the youth we serve, we address: low academic performance in high schools; access to college education for first generation college students; problems faced by run-away and homeless teens; civic service opportunities post high school-graduation; academic and practical challenges faced by immigrant and refugee families; and familial involvement in youth’s lives.

AmeriCorps VISTA is a National Service programs that bring together citizens of diverse backgrounds to serve communities in the areas of education, public safety, human needs, and the environment. Members spend one year in full-time service to address the needs of low-income communities. All projects focus on building assets and permanent infrastructure in organizations, to help them more effectively bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
