General Maintenance Person (Summerfield Apartments - Bellevue) #17-1005

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Supervisor

LOCATION:Summerfield Apartments 14710 NE 1st Pl, Bellevue, WA 98007

DESCRIPTION:

The YWCA Permanent Housing portfolio includes over 800 affordable apartment units and provides a comprehensive continuum of housing and services specifically designed to promote housing stability and self-sufficiency. This maintenance position is responsible for performing day-to-day repairs and maintenance as well as unit turnovers at YWCA Summerfield Apartments in Bellevue, and may assist other YWCA maintenance staff at other YWCA properties within King County. Employee may occasionally perform general grounds maintenance and basic custodial tasks.  

This position has a social justice component that requires critical thinking through the lens of racism and intersections with poverty. Knowing the core principals of antiracism and grounding those principles in everyday work are required job skills and core values. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs general maintenance and repairs of YWCA properties including plumbing, electrical and aesthetics
  • Provide regular communication with leadership and other maintenance staff
  • Vacant unit turnovers including clean-up, painting, flooring
  • Address and complete maintenance work orders
  • Incorporate the YWCA’s Social Justice Initiative by understanding how racism, sexism, classism and other oppressions intersect and are embedded in institutions.
  • Continue search for understanding of racial, gender and class equity.
  • Adhere to all Volunteer Services protocol relative to volunteer usage, recognition and monitoring.
  • Assure that clients, residents, staff, volunteers and community partners are treated with respect and dignity regardless of race, ethnic background, gender or socioeconomic background.
  • Ability to occasionally respond to emergencies on week-ends, evenings and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license and personal vehicle to travel to multiple sites (Monthly Mileage Reimbursement)
  • Working knowledge of building systems, including electrical, lighting, HVAC and plumbing
  • Knowledge of common facility construction, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure
  • Strong organization and record keeping skills
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to work as a part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to use standard hand and power tools
  • Experience using common computer applications
  • Experience working with communities of color and people from different cultures than your own.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of racism and poverty
  • Ability to communicate and work with other staff, clients, contractors and residents from a variety of racial, cultural, and economic background. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous training in building maintenance, safety and general maintenance techniques
  • General knowledge of energy conservation principles
  • Experience working on multi-family housing
  • Experience working with homeless people
  • Experience advancing social and economic justice

  • Continuously and repetitively uses hands and wrists, fingering, handling, grasping, and reaching in using telephones, computers, hand tools, and power tools

  • Frequently drive own vehicle to work sites.
  • Occasionally climbs stairs of multi-level apartment complexes

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent 

HOURS, RATE, BENEFITS:

  • Full-time. Monday – Friday during normal business.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Classification: Non-exempt
  • Ability to be on-call week-ends, evening, and holidays.
  • Grade 16.  $16.35 - $19.00 DOE
  • Excellent benefits package including medical insurance, retirement plan, plus generous vacation, holiday and sick leave plans
  • At the time of hire, employees may choose to voluntarily enroll in the Fidelity 403b Plan. Typically after two years of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund.
